Insecurity is awful, so we do whatever is necessary to make the wobble go away. You may think that certain habits are part of your personality when in reality, they are secret signs of insecurity.
A Success Junky
I used to crave success. I learned in my teenage years that doing well made me feel good. The day I got my school leaver exam results was like a shot in the arm. I did better than expected which made me feel important. Without realising, I became a success seeker.
At work, every promotion, achievement, or compliment made me feel valuable. Just knowing I had a good job made me feel good about myself. But without my achievements, I felt inadequate.
What Are Insecurities?
Insecurities are symptoms. They show that deep down, you don’t feel like you’re enough without your fix. They are therefore an indicator that you need God to do a deep work in your heart. He wants to heal every sense of inadequacy.
It Impacts Others Views Too
I was working as a director when I was head hunted to run a new unit at a leading company. When the perks and bonuses were counted, it was nearly three times what I was earning! But that wasn’t the end of it. Just as the company was putting the offer in writing, my soon-to-be-boss told me that they were lowering the salary. It was a significant drop. It felt horrible.
That weekend we had a prophet coming for dinner. I shared the story with him and he responded, “You don’t believe you’re worth their original offer. Until you do, you won’t get it.”
I gave the impression that I was confident, but underneath my veneer, I didn’t value myself much. I felt like a fraud. I went into prayer and asked God to do a work in my heart and show me His view of my value. Within 48 hours the original offer was back on the table.
Underneath Your Insecurities
If you don’t value you, why should anyone else? The Bible says that “As a man thinks in his heart, so he is.” (Proverbs 23:7) That means that your inner image will affect your life. You unknowingly project the value you place on yourself.
I wanted my salary to make me feel valuable but I had to know my true worth in God’s eyes before I could receive the package the Lord had in store for me.
If you can relate to any of these, God wants to dig deep and heal your heart. When he restored my soul, my insecurities dropped off. The freedom was phenomenal.
- Failing makes you feel like a failure
- You seek affirmation when you feel unsure about yourself
- Job titles or positions are important to you
- You seek approval from certain people
- Feedback makes you feel bad.
If you relate, ask God to show you why you feel like you’re not enough, then ask Him to heal your heart.
