Do you feel a weight on the inside, even when nothing is wrong? There may be no tears, no crisis, just a sadness beneath the surface. You may feel flatter than usual, a bit less yourself. That’s what a heavy spirit is like. It can feel like a cloak draped over your heart that makes it hard to hope. It can make joy feel just a little further away than it should. If that’s where you are today, I want to share how you can find freedom in Christ and feel light again.
When the Soul Melts
In Psalm 119:28, the psalmist writes: “My soul melts from heaviness…”
When you are battling with a spirit of heaviness, it can feel like your inner strength is melting away. You might be able to quote the right verses and know that God is good, but your heart is weighed down.
Just as a fish needs water to survive and thrive, you were created to live in an atmosphere of lightness and joy. If you often feel a heaviness on the inside, it’s a sign your heart needs some attention.
6 Signs You Might Be Dealing With The Spirit Of Heaviness (Without Realising It)
- Going through the motions: You might be doing the right things, but you don’t have a whole lot of joy in life right now.
- Sighing: You catch yourself sighing during the day, you’re not even sure why.
- Sadness: You have a sadness beneath the surface.
- Drive: Your motivation is a bit muted and your dreams feel out of reach.
- Detachment: You feel a bit detached from the people you love, even from God.
- Discouragement: You often feel down, even when things are technically fine.
Two Roots of Heaviness
To get free, we have to look at what allowed the spirit of heaviness to settle in the first place. While there can be many reasons, I want to look at two common ones.

1. The Sting of Hurts
The first root is unresolved hurt. People can be cruel. Whether it’s a sharp word from a spouse, rejection by a close friend, or put downs at work, these things leave marks.
Psalm 69:20 says, “Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness…”
Reproach means insults, mockery, or being looked down upon. It’s the kind of hurt that makes you feel exposed or ashamed. When we are treated this way, all too often we push it down and just get on with things. But if you don’t deal with buried pain, you will probably see it taint your every day life.
You might notice triggers, maybe a certain tone of voice or a specific situation, that make that heavy cloak feel heavier. That’s a sign of an old hurt that God wants to heal.
2. The Sinkhole of Grief and Disappointment
The second root is grief. This isn’t just about the loss of a loved one, though that is a massive source of heaviness. It’s also about the small deaths: the loss of a dream, the collapse of great plans or the end of a relationship.
Isaiah 24:16b says, “…my heart is heavy with grief… I wither away.”
Grief has a way of sinking to the bottom of our souls. It leaves behind sadness or a dull ache. It can make us think we will always have to carry that weight. Disappointment can take the wind out of our sails. It can make us feel empty.
Why You Can’t Just “Snap Out of It”
If you’ve been told to just “cheer up” or “have more faith,” please know that those words often add to the heaviness rather than lifting it. It is an issue of the heart, and your heart needs a Physician. The Lord wants to reach in heal you anywhere you hurt.
The Way Out: Turning Pain into Prayer
The Bible gives us a wonderful promise in Psalm 147:3: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds [curing their pains and their sorrows].”
God doesn’t ignore our wounds; He cures the pain.
- Ask for Revelation: Sit quietly with the Lord and ask, “Father, why is my heart so heavy? Is there a hurt I’ve buried? Is there a grief I’m still carrying?”
- Be Honest: When He brings something to mind, a memory, a face, a disappointment, tell Him how it made you feel. If it made you feel ashamed, say so. If it made you feel hopeless, tell Him.
- Give it to God: Instead of just thinking about the pain, give it to Him. Say, “Lord, I give You this hurt from [name of person or situation]. I can’t carry this weight anymore. Please come and heal my heart.”
